Forests by Heartfulness, in partnership with the Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram Trust, is supporting the ecological restoration and landscape development of the iconic Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad. The project aims to create a greener, biodiversity-rich environment while preserving the heritage and values associated with Mahatma Gandhi's legacy.

The Story

Sabarmati Ashram has long stood as a symbol of simplicity, sustainability, and service. As part of the Ashram's redevelopment vision, FBH developed a comprehensive plantation and biodiversity restoration plan that places nature at the heart of the visitor experience.

Spread across a 56-acre campus, the project prioritizes open green spaces, with 33.7 acres (60%) dedicated to landscaped and ecological areas. The restoration plan includes the plantation of 63,900 saplings in three phases, comprising 4,400 large trees, 6,600 medium trees, and 52,900 shrubs and understory plants, along with approximately 150,000 ground covers and creepers.

More than a landscaping initiative, the project seeks to create a thriving ecosystem that supports biodiversity, enhances environmental resilience, and offers visitors a deeper connection with nature.

By blending ecological restoration with heritage conservation, the initiative reflects the timeless values of harmony, simplicity, and sustainable living that Sabarmati Ashram represents.
